How We Test & Review Products
How We Test & Review Products
At PetMessFix, we know that when a pet makes a mess, you need a solution that actually works—not a gimmick that falls short when you need it most. We take our responsibility to pet parents seriously, which is why we have developed a rigorous, hands-on testing methodology for every product we recommend.
Whether we are evaluating the clumping power of a new cat litter or the stain-lifting abilities of an enzymatic cleaner, our goal is to provide you with the most accurate, reliable, and honest reviews on the internet.
Our Testing Philosophy
Our testing philosophy is simple: we put products to the test in real homes, with real pets, facing real messes. We don't rely on manufacturer claims or marketing jargon. If a product claims to eliminate urine odors, we test it on actual pet stains. If a litter claims to be dust-free, we pour it in a dark room with a flashlight to see exactly what gets kicked into the air. Our real-world testing ensures that the products we recommend will hold up to the chaos of everyday life with animals.
How We Select Products to Review
The pet care market is flooded with thousands of products. To decide what to test, our editorial team spends hours researching market trends, reading customer reviews, and consulting with our veterinary advisory board. We select products based on:
- Popularity: We test the best-selling items that our readers are most curious about.
- Innovation: We look for new technologies or unique formulas that promise better results.
- Reader Requests: We listen to our community. If multiple readers ask us to review a specific stain remover or litter box, we add it to our testing queue.
Our Testing Criteria
We evaluate every product against a strict set of criteria tailored to its category. For example, when testing cat litter, we score products based on the following metrics:
- Odor Control: How well does the product mask or neutralize smells over a one-week, two-week, and four-week period?
- Clumping Ability: Do the clumps hold together tightly, or do they crumble and contaminate the rest of the box?
- Dust Levels: How much dust is produced when pouring the litter and when the cat digs?
- Tracking: How much litter ends up outside the box and tracked throughout the house?
- Cat Acceptance: Ultimately, if the cats refuse to use it, the product fails. We monitor our feline testers for their comfort and willingness to adapt.
For cleaning supplies, we look at stain removal efficacy on various surfaces (carpet, hardwood, upholstery), scent profile, drying time, and safety around pets.
How We Rate Products
We use a comprehensive 1 to 5-star rating system:
- 5 Stars (Exceptional): The product exceeded our expectations, performed flawlessly in all criteria, and offers excellent value. It is a top recommendation.
- 4 Stars (Great): A highly effective product with only minor drawbacks (e.g., slightly high price point or a strong scent).
- 3 Stars (Average): The product works adequately but doesn't stand out from the competition.
- 2 Stars (Below Average): The product failed in one or more key testing criteria and is not recommended.
- 1 Star (Poor): The product completely failed to perform its intended function or posed a safety concern.
Independence and Transparency
Our product reviews are strictly independent. We purchase the vast majority of the products we test with our own funds. On the rare occasion that a brand sends us a product for free to review, we disclose that clearly in the article, and we never guarantee a positive review in exchange for free merchandise. Our loyalty is entirely to you and your pets.
How Long We Test
You can't evaluate a pet product in a single afternoon. Depending on the item, our testing periods range from a few weeks to several months. Cat litters are tested for a minimum of four weeks to evaluate odor control and longevity. Enzymatic cleaners are evaluated immediately after a mess and checked again weeks later to ensure odors haven't returned.
Who Conducts the Testing
Our testing is conducted by our dedicated team of pet experts, led by our founder, Sarah Jenkins, a former veterinary technician. But the real stars of the show are our animal testers—like Sarah’s three cats (Luna, Milo, and Oliver) and her Golden Retriever, Barnaby. We also partner with a network of volunteer pet parents who help us test products in diverse household environments (e.g., multi-pet homes, senior pets, allergy-prone pets).
How We Update Reviews
The pet product industry is always evolving. Manufacturers change formulas, update packaging, or discontinue lines. We regularly revisit our top-recommended products and conduct re-testing to ensure our guides remain accurate and up-to-date. If a previously highly-rated product drops in quality, we will adjust its score and let you know.
